Official Opening of Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop — 2019

Open Open

The Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop was officially inaugurated in 2019, marking a significant milestone in improving access to rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities in the Lake Zone region of Tanzania. The opening ceremony brought together key stakeholders, including the local District Commissioner (DC), healthcare professionals, community leaders, partners, sponsors, and donors who share a commitment to advancing inclusive healthcare and mobility solutions.

The presence of the District Commissioner highlighted the importance of strengthening local healthcare infrastructure and improving rehabilitation services for underserved populations. During the event, guests toured the facility, learned about the workshop’s mission, and witnessed demonstrations showcasing innovative prosthetic and orthotic solutions designed to restore mobility, independence, and dignity to individuals with physical disabilities.

Sponsors and donors were recognized for their invaluable support in establishing the workshop, reflecting a strong spirit of collaboration between local leadership, international partners, and the rehabilitation community. The opening represented not only the launch of a new clinical facility but also the beginning of a long-term vision to expand access to quality prosthetic and orthotic care, professional training, and community outreach across the region.

Since its inauguration, the Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop has continued to serve as a vital center for rehabilitation, empowering individuals to lead more active and independent lives.

First Outreach Initiative: Visit to Shirati Hospital

Following the official opening of the Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop in 2019, our first major endeavor was an outreach visit to Shirati Hospital, located in the Lake Zone region of Tanzania. This visit marked the beginning of our commitment to extending rehabilitation services beyond our facility and strengthening regional collaboration in prosthetic and orthotic care.

The primary objective of the visit was to provide technical support, clinical assistance, and hands-on training to local healthcare professionals working with persons with disabilities. Recognizing the challenges faced by remote healthcare facilities — including limited specialized training, resource constraints, and reduced access to prosthetic services — our team worked closely with hospital staff to share practical knowledge, introduce low-cost rehabilitation solutions, and enhance clinical skills.

During the visit, patient assessments were conducted, and collaborative sessions allowed for knowledge exchange between practitioners. The initiative emphasized capacity building, ensuring that local teams could continue delivering improved care long after the outreach concluded.

This first outreach to Shirati Hospital set the foundation for Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop’s ongoing mission: to expand access to quality rehabilitation services, empower local healthcare providers through training, and improve mobility outcomes for individuals living in underserved communities throughout the region.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities Outreach — 2021

IDPD Outreach

In celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd, 2021, Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop organized a special outreach initiative aimed at improving mobility and enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with physical disabilities in the Lake Zone region of Tanzania. The event reflected our continued commitment to promoting inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

During this impactful initiative, approximately 150 individuals received prosthetic devices free of charge. The outreach brought together our clinical team, community partners, volunteers, and supporters who worked collaboratively to assess patients, fabricate prosthetic solutions, and provide rehabilitation guidance tailored to each individual’s needs.

The program addressed significant barriers that many persons with disabilities face, including financial limitations, limited access to specialized services, and geographic challenges. By offering prosthetic care at no cost, the initiative enabled beneficiaries to regain mobility, independence, and renewed confidence in participating in daily life, education, and economic activities.

Beyond device provision, the event also served as a platform to raise awareness about disability rights, rehabilitation services, and the importance of community support. The success of the 2021 International Day of Persons with Disabilities outreach demonstrated the power of partnership and reinforced Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop’s mission to expand access to high-quality prosthetic and orthotic care across underserved communities.

Community Support Through Donations and Assistive Services

Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop remains deeply committed to improving the lives of persons with disabilities by increasing access to essential rehabilitation services and mobility solutions. Through dedicated outreach programs and collaborative partnerships, the workshop has provided donations in the form of prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices, and a wide range of assistive equipment to individuals who would otherwise face significant barriers to receiving care.

To date, more than 300 individuals have directly benefited from these donation initiatives. Each device provided represents a renewed opportunity for independence, mobility, and active participation in daily life, education, and economic activities. Recognizing that many persons with disabilities face financial challenges and limited access to specialized services, the workshop prioritizes reaching underserved communities and ensuring that support is both accessible and sustainable.

These donation efforts go beyond simply providing devices; they include clinical assessments, fitting, rehabilitation guidance, and follow-up support to ensure long-term effectiveness and user satisfaction. Through the generosity of partners, sponsors, and donors, Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop continues to create meaningful impact, empowering individuals and strengthening inclusive healthcare within the region.

Regional Training and Capacity Building Initiatives

training training

Mwanza Prosthetics & Orthotics Workshop is committed not only to delivering high-quality rehabilitation services but also to strengthening professional capacity across Africa through practical training initiatives. In collaboration with partners and regional stakeholders, the workshop has organized and participated in hands-on training sessions in Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, and Sierra Leone, aimed at improving access to affordable and high-quality prosthetic care

These training programs focus on practical, skills-based learning designed to equip prosthetists, orthotists, and rehabilitation professionals with innovative techniques, cost-effective fabrication methods, and sustainable approaches to service delivery. By emphasizing low-cost technologies and efficient clinical practices, the trainings support local practitioners in producing durable, functional prosthetic solutions that meet international standards while remaining accessible to underserved populations.

Through knowledge exchange, mentorship, and collaborative learning, these initiatives help build stronger local capacity, reduce reliance on external support, and promote long-term sustainability within rehabilitation services across the region. The workshops also encourage regional networking among professionals, fostering a shared commitment to improving mobility outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for persons with disabilities throughout Africa.
